Character Make-up Kits
by Special Effect Supply
Welcome to our collection of makeup effects character kits.
These kits are appropriate for fun, theater, Halloween and other projects that don't
require realism such as video or film. Your results will depend on your own artistic
ability.
Kits are a great way to accomplish a single look without investing a hundred dollars in
individual colors. You pay a little extra for the convenience and instructions. If you
plan to use the look for a production may I suggest you get the kit for color selection
and design and later purchase the individual colors that you need.
These kits should be considered Personal kits because they only contain enough makeup
for one or two applications for one person. Forget the idea that you can get one kit for
one character for several members of your cast.
These are creme kits, which means the makeup will have to be powdered with the provided
setting powder. Often the miniature brushes in these kits are not available for sale, but
individual makeup colors are. If you want to supplement the kits I recommend you get
extra sponge wedges.
Here are the most common questions I get regarding these kits.
Q. How many applications will I get from a kit
A. Please read the description for each kit.
Q. Is this stuff safe to put on your skin or face
A. Yes, the makers of these kits use approved FDA materials.
Q. Do I need a special remover
A. No, but there are some good theatrical makeup removers on our website. Some kits may
contain removers. There's a variety of home remedies that will work just fine. Just
remember you are trying to remove a large glob of pigmented oil that has been set with
powder.
Q. How many days will this stay on
A. It will only look good for several hours. If you are thinking in terms of days you are
probably going to a sci fi convention. Please follow their advise and take a bath every
morning. Follow my advise and reapply the makeup fresh every day.
Q. These are greasepaint, right
A. These are creme makeup formulas, made from a blend of wax and oils. Think; greasepaint
= Shakespeare. Think; creme as the modern formula of greasepaint.
Q. How many people can I paint with one kit
A. One, these are personal kits unless otherwise specified. There is really not that much
makeup in these kits.
Q. Can I mix the makeup to get different colors.
A. Yes, to a point, but cosmetic grade pigments are not the same as art store paints.
Q. Why don't I just use cosmetics I find at the grocery store
A. Good luck finding these colors.
Q. Can I change the design
A. You can't perform a miracle, but you'll change it quite naturally simply because your
artistic level will be different from the artist used in the instructions. You may be
better or worse.
Q. Do you think I can do this
A. No. I've known you for twenty years and you have absolutely no ability. The only time
you ask me that question is when you want me to do work for you. Well, I'm not falling
for it this time.
